Mouse

Back in 2008, I tried to break into the Open Source Hardware business by creating some breakouts of my own. One such breakout was of an optical mouse sensor. It didn’t do too much, but it connected to Arduino and had a library that tracked the X,Y position and other cool stuff that optical mouse sensors do. Well, my breakout didn’t really go very far. Not as far as the one that SparkFun made. I wound up with a bunch of the sensors and lenses had them sitting around in a box in my lab for years. So, last year I made a full-on Open Source Computer Mouse with the stock on my shelf. It’s based on the Arduino Leonardo, and plugs right into your computer and acts just like a USB mouse. Of course, you could hack it into almost anything. There’s more history and details here.

Heartbone

In 2015, I was asked to participate on a panel at SXSW that focused on brain hacking. It was a great panel and I had a ton of fun in Austin. The conference happened just before the launch of the very first Apple Watch, and I ended up having many conversations with Melissa Fierce about the nature of time, how we measure it, and how the way we measure it shapes us. When I got home, I was inspired to make something in response to those conversations. Heart Bone is a reference to a small thing that you find when you’re not looking. Like a piece of beach glass, or a small stone that is perfect in your hand. Heart Bone is a small 2 color LCD screen that plays gifs that you find or create and load onto it.

Sculpture Systems

In a previous life, I was a kinetic sculptor. My foundation was in the crafts (jewelry making, metal smithing, ceramics, glassblowing). On top of that, I added chaos theory, cybernetics, and mechanical engineering. This link will take you to an old site that has documentation of some of the work that I did.

More to come as I digitize old media. Enjoy!
